Junior League of Sioux City Celebrates Discovery Shop’s 40th Anniversary

During the week of January 31st, 2011, the Junior League of Sioux City (JLSC) will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Discovery Shop, located at 316 West 7th Street in Sioux City, Iowa. On February 4, 1971, the JLSC officially established and opened the Junior League Discovery Shop, which has since become the organization’s one and only on-going fundraiser. The store offers for sale to the public gently used clothing, shoes, toys, housewares and furniture.

The Discovery Shop benefits the community and JLSC in several ways:

  1. by providing funds for JLSC projects and training;
  2. by providing quality merchandise at affordable prices;
  3. through the Dress For Success program, providing vouchers for people getting back into the work force to community agencies for distribution to their clients who may be in need of interview/work appropriate clothing; and
  4. by providing a means for a person to recycle items while also receiving tax credit.

For 40 years, JLSC has found this fundraiser to be beneficial for the organization as well as the community at large. Each JLSC member is a part of the fundraiser, donating thrift quota throughout the year, as well as assisting the shop’s operations by working shifts in the store.

The majority of thrift donated for sale in the store comes from Junior League of Sioux City members; however, the organization encourages donations from the general public. Anyone wishing to donate thrift to the Discovery Shop may do so by taking their gently used items to the shop during regular business hours.

The mission of the Junior League of Sioux City is to address community needs through the participation of its trained volunteers.  For 90 years, the JLSC has established a reputation of excellence in Siouxland for adopting community projects and providing them with the volunteer and funding support necessary for them to succeed.
