In 1971, the JLSC established and opened the Junior League Discovery Shop, which has since become the organization’s one and only fundraiser. The Junior League Discovery Shop, which quickly outgrew its first two locations, is now located at 316 West 7th Street in Sioux City, Iowa and offers for sale to the public gently used clothing, shoes, toys, housewares and furniture.
The Discovery Shop benefits the community and JLSC in several ways:
- by providing funds for JLSC projects and training;
- by providing quality merchandise at affordable prices;
- through the Dress For Success program, providing vouchers for people getting back into the work force to community agencies for distribution to their clients who may be in need of interview/work appropriate clothing; and
- by providing a means for a person to recycle items while also receiving tax credit.
For over 30 years, JLSC has found this fundraiser to be beneficial for the organization as well as the community at large. Each JLSC member is a part of the fundraiser, donating thrift quota throughout the year, as well as assisting the shop’s operations by working shifts in the store. During the organization’s 2008-2009 year, the Discovery Shop grossed over $169,000 to benefit the Siouxland community.
The majority of thrift donated for sale in the store comes from Junior League of Sioux City members, however the organization also accepts donations of clothing, housewares, shoes, toys and furniture from the community at large. Anyone wishing to donate thrift to the Discovery Shop may do so by taking there gently used items to the shop during regular business hours. Â Please see Donation Guidelines for more information.
