In a volunteer organization, it is the ongoing support and ambition of members that makes a group succeed. For the Junior League of Sioux City (JLSC), it is not only the action of current members that drives the group’s success, but also the ongoing support of its sustaining members who have long upheld the values of the group. In honor of our sustaining members, each year the Dorothy Eaton Palmer Award is presented to one outstanding individual. This year the 27th annual award is presented to JLSC sustaining member Mary Ellen Hartman.
The Dorothy Eaton Palmer Award, named for a charter member and early president, is given in recognition of Hartman’s outstanding voluntarism, leadership, and commitment to the community. It is the highest honor the Junior League bestows upon a sustaining member.
As a League member, Hartman’s contributions to JLSC were unsurpassable, but it is the skills she developed in Junior League and went on to use in greater Siouxland voluntarism efforts that won her this award. Her voluntarism spirit has shown in community projects outside of the Junior League, which include being a church council member, twice as council president, among many other functions; serving two terms on the United Way of Siouxland Board, both as chair of the board and as committee chairs; serving on the Siouxland Community Foundation Board as chair of both the Grant Review Committee and the Marketing Development Committee; and Hartman rounded out her volunteer effort serving terms on the Sioux City Art Center Association Board and the Western Iowa Tech Foundation Board.
Through Hartman’s efforts working with community organizations she has made Siouxland a better community. In recognition of this, an honorarium that accompanies her award will be given to a charity of Hartman’s choice. For 90 years, the JLSC has established a reputation of excellence for voluntarism in Siouxland. It an honor to have a sustaining member like Mary Ellen exemplify this. Now Taking Fall/Winter Applications!
Need a helping hand? The Junior League of Sioux City (JLSC) has a few to spare! Currently “Done in a Day” applications are being accepted. The application is open to any non-profit organization in need of volunteers for a one-day community based event. The application deadline for fall/winter events is August 8th, 2011.
Events the JLSC has assisted with recently include picnics, food bank distribution, holiday parties, egg hunts, and water distribution for races. Volunteer placements are generally scheduled in four-hour shifts for a half or full day event. In addition to volunteer support, the JLSC will donate up to $75 per project to help with costs such as supplies or refreshments. This funding is made possible by the JLSC’s signature project, the Discovery Shop thrift store located at 316 W. 7th Street. The support of the community allows the Junior League of Sioux City to invest back into Siouxland.
Short-term support creates a lasting impact in our community! “Done in a Day Projects are essential to our organization. These events allow members to connect with other non-profit agencies and make a difference in our community,” says Krista Wassenaar, Project Development Chair for the JLSC. “And the service our members provide is pivotal to helping these fellow non-profits achieve their mission. We provide the volunteer support they need- when they need it most.”
For 90 years, the JLSC has established a reputation of excellence in Siouxland for adopting community projects and providing them with the volunteer and funding support necessary to succeed. By reaching out to other local non-profit organizations and offering a helping hand, the JLSC is achieving its mission to address community needs through the participation of its trained volunteers. Organizations interested in turning in a “Done in a Day” application can learn more here or for additional information or questions contact the Project Development Chair, Krista Wassenaar, at 712-259-2358.
